Stylist Q&A

How to find your personal style?

There’s a handful of things to consider but to help I’ve done a post last year on this so you can check it out [ Read Here : Personal styling in a nutshell ]

Fashion trends you hate?

There’s so many but I’m definitely not a fan of the durag. I think I can try tolerate other trends but this one I can’t ignore. I can’t take anyone serious who wears one.

Fashion trends you love?

I love how neutral tones made such a drastic comeback this year. Seeing two-pieces, dresses, shoes and other clothing items in neutral tones on my timeline has been such a breath of fresh air. Brands have even created so many looks with a neutral palette and I’m here for it.

Your biggest fashion inspirations?

Visual/mood boards are creations I always put together to get an idea of what fashion inspo I’m set on for a certain season or project. I also love creating styling boards which I used to love creating on an app called Polyvore but unfortunately it’s permanently shut down so I do opt just collecting pictures and creating style boards via Presentation or Word. It’s always fun having inspiration to work with and go back to, to assist you in locking down work or whatever project you want to achieve. Just having something that you can go back to and remind yourself of the vision and initial direction that you wanted in the beginning. I often use them as a guideline to get myself back on board if I do find that I lose direction.

Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

I get a lot of my fashion inspiration from fashion sites I follow – Net-A-Porter, Pinterest etc. Lately I have been leaning more towards the bloggers I follow.

Your favourite statement pieces?

My go-to statement piece has always been earrings. I’m not big on jewellery but a minimal, organic earpiece really locks in my outfits. Recently though, I’ve been into shoes. And just like the earpieces I’m always reaching out for, they’re just as minimal, functional and versatile shoes that compliment pieces I own.

The best places to shop?

In my world it has to be H&M. I’m always grabbing pieces from the store and I know it’s a guarantee that I’ll find something that fits my style.

How to start a fashion blog?

Do as much research as you can. Start out by trying out sites that are free so you get an idea of how you want your site to look and feel. Research as much ideas for what posts and content you want to create and just research as much as you can. Check out other blogs that are similar to what you want your site to look like and be about and that way you can get an idea of whether it’s even what you really want to create content for BUT even in doing so don’t compare your content to other bloggers because they’ve started somewhere too. Make sure you’re being authentic in it all and putting out posts that do reflect what you’re about and what you stand for. A fashion blog or just a blog as a whole is about consistently being on board and keeping people alert on whatever it is that you’re writing about. A blog is all about content creation and staying consistent to keep your visitors glued. But to sum it all up JUST START! Below I put some free sites that you can check out if you want to start a blog:

  • WordPress
  • Blogger
  • Squarespace
  • Wix
  • Blogspot

How do you stay up to date with fashion?

I’m signed up to a few sites that keep me up to date with trends. My go-to are Net-A-Porter, Elle, Vogue, Harper Bazaar and Pinterest etc.

Top tips for dressing confidently?

Start off by figuring out what items make you comfortable and what style you’re drawn towards so you create more styles according to that particular look you’re going for. Make sure that whatever style you leaning towards makes you feel good that way you’ll walk around feeling confident. Make sure you’re also not just wearing whatever based on how it looked on another individual. I think a lot of the time women do just wear whatever ‘just because’ and not really considering that we should own who we are. Dress for your body type and make sure it fits, feels and looks good.

Gift guides for fashion lovers?

Dependent on what their love, right? There are fashion lovers who like shoes, bags, clothes and some who just love all so find out what they’re favourites are. A safe bet for me would be a bag because things like size and fit wouldn’t really be an issue.

Your current style muse?

I’m stuck on two right now. The first would have to be Loicka Grace (@thevisuelofgrace) and Stephanie Broek (@stephanibroek).
